Larry Cunningham – A Country Legend

Larry Cunningham was a country legend who enjoyed chart success in the 1960s and right into the early 1980s in the field of country and Irish music.  His first success was in the UK charts with A Tribute to Jim Reeves in December 1964.  At this time, he was the lead singer with the Cavan showband, The Mighty Avons.  Larry came from Mullinalachta near Granard in North Longford, where he was born on the 13 February 1938.  He played Gaelic football as a young man and he was a carpenter by trade. 

The Irish Free State and the Coolidge Naval Conference

During the 1920s, several conferences were held with a view to putting restrictions on the naval forces of the major powers. The Irish Free State did not have a navy at this point, nevertheless, the government still had some reason to be interested in naval disarmament. The scholar Gerard Keown has noted that small states 'tend to be more interested in a stable international environment.’ Moreover, disarmament was one of the aims of the League of Nations.
