Bernie Murphy, an Irish designer/entrepreneur seeks inspiration from the beautiful landscapes and environment that surrounds her in Donegal. Bernie loves working with Donegal Tweed to develop and create her unique heritage style with contemporary, handmade headbands, garments, and accessories, sustainably sourced, using local mills in Donegal.
Working as a garment technologist for a number of years in Fruit of the Loom, Bernie decided to go back to college when made redundant in 2006. It was at Northwest Regional College in Derry that she received her HND in Fashion and Textile Design.
Following this, Bernie went on to earn her Degree in Textile Art at the University of Ulster, Belfast and not long after got involved with the Creative Coast and the Design and Crafts Council Ireland through the Local Enterprise Office, Donegal. Bernie completed the Craft Development Business Course in 2017 and has never looked back.
“Since commencing my business I have extended my customer base by trading online reaching a global market and meeting new customers from Austria, Helsinki, to Holland, Germany, the US and El Salvador,” said Bernie. “It’s been key to the growth of my business.”
“I recently launched the Identity Collection. I named this collection ‘Identity’; who we are, the way we think about ourselves, the way we view the world and the characteristics that define us. I personally think that we have learnt a lot about who we are and what we are about of the last 19 months with the global pandemic. I have designed this collection with this in mind and the new smart casual lifestyle we find ourselves living in.”
Through hard and consistent work, Bernie has grown her business into what it is today. Her loyal customers, friends, and family have crowned her business, Bernie Murphy – Irish Designer, as the overall winner of Best of Ireland 2021.
